Impact of road and traffic characteristics on the traffic accidents
Abstract
Modelling traffic accidents on motorways is very significant due to the frequency and severity of traffic accidents which occur on these roads, as well as due to traffic jams they cause. Bearing this in mind, the objective of this paper was to analyze the impact of road and traffic characteristics on the occurrence of traffic accidents with fatalities on motorways in Serbia. The paper analyzed traffic accidents with fatalities which had occurred in the period from 2004 to 2013 on the M-1 motorway, with the total length of 394km. A regression analysis and the Table Curve software were used in the analysis of data. The developed models represent the first attempt of quantifying the mentioned impacts on the motorways in Serbia. These models should contribute to the improvement of safety of the existing motorways and designing new safer motorways in our country.
