The impact of motorway construction on the volume and distribution of traffic flows: A comparative analysis of the A1, A2 and A4 motorways in Serbia
Abstract
In this paper, the total traffic flows on the alternative (old) road and the new motorway were analyzed, after the construction of the new motorway. Traffic flows were analyzed on the A1, A2 and A4 motorways and parallel alternative roads IB-22, IIA-258 and IIA-259. The aim of the paper is the analysis of the distribution of total traffic flows on the alternative (old) road and on the motorway, as well as the analysis of the volume of the traffic flows. Statistical analysis methods were applied in the paper. The obtained results show an increase of traffic flows after the construction of the highway on all three road directions. The increase is the biggest on the Belgrade - Čačak road direction. The analysis yielded very interesting data on the distribution of traffic flows. In further research, it is necessary to monitor traffic growth trends, as well as to conduct a survey in order to reveal the laws and influencing factors on the volume and distribution of traffic flows. It is especially important to determine the categories of traffic flows (induced, diverted and normal traffic flows) through the survey.
